1. On the personal level, action on global warming is a daily practice, a way of life. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/06/opinion/sunday/climate-change-global-warming.html

2. The IPCC has released its 750-page report contrasting the effects of 1.5C and 2C of warming. It calls for dramatic action to avert the further deterioration of our climate. 1.5C will be sufficiently unsettling. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/07/climate/ipcc-climate-report-2040.html

3. The Guardian provides another attempt to summarize the report. The contrast with the NY Times’ coverage is striking, with the Guardian attempting more successfully to envision the necessary changes ahead to avoid a catastrophe. The report will be presented to a gathering of national representatives in Poland at the end of the year. They will decide on fresh actions and commitments. “I hope this can change the world,” said China’s Jiang Kejun, an author of the report. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/08/global-warming-must-not-exceed-15c-warns-landmark-un-report

4. The summary of the IPCC report was approved, line by line, by the assembled nations, including the US and Saudi Arabia. The full report lists consequences of inadequate mitigation much softened in the summary. For example, the population dislocations from the effects of climate change can lead to political instability and war. The summary also omits the possibility of crossing tipping points which lead to unstoppable and accelerating global heating. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/08/world-leaders-climate-change-ipcc-report

5. Christiana Figueres observes that the obstacles to limiting warming to 1.5C are “mainly political; they are not technical or economic.” Policymakers, corporations, and voters need to act to win “a safer, more prosperous future.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/08/limiting-warming-to-15c-is-possible-if-there-is-political-will-climate-change

6. The report’s full name is Global Warming of 1.5C, an IPCC special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change, sustainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty. Science Daily gets into some of its weeds. “Global Warming of 1.5°C is the first in a series of Special Reports to be produced in the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Cycle. Next year the IPCC will release the Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, and Climate Change and Land, which looks at how climate change affects land use.” https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181008075147.htm
