1. Hurricanes which, like Michael and Harvey, intensify rapidly before they make landfall have become more common and will become more common yet at the climate changes. Because their rapid buildup limits the opportunity for evacuation and other preparations they can be especially damaging. Intensity forecasts have not improved greatly. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6/Dangerous-Rapidly-Intensifying-Landfalling-Hurricanes-Michael-and-Harvey-May-Grow-More-Common

As Hurricane Michael sped northwards on October 9 towards a catastrophic landfall on Florida’s Panhandle, the mighty hurricane put on an phenomenal display of rapid intensification.

2. The IPCC 1.5C report continues the organization’s conservative sea level rise estimates—1-3 feet by 2100 with 2C of warming. Richard Alley warns that the upper range of possible rise should be 15-20 feet, roughly as James Hansen has been warning for about ten years. Keeping warming to 1.5C would help the situation. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/climate-change-sea-level-rise-737012/

3. As CO2 levels rise, leaves will become significantly thicker and sequester less carbon. Under CO2 levels expected later this century, this means that they will sequester about 6.4 billion tons less of carbon each year—roughly equal to the current carbon addition from human activity. “We have to assume that the consequences for global warming will be even more dramatic than previously calculated.” https://mailchi.mp/climatenewsnetwork/flourishing-forests-pose-carbon-questions?e=ea792e87f2

4. Much of the reaction to the IPCC 1.5C report was despairing, but it need not have been. In power generation, transportation, and carbon drawdown we have the tools not only available but, especially in power and transportation, already moving into operation to deal with the threat to our earth posed by using fossil fuels. https://medium.com/the-future-is-electric/ipcc-1-5-degree-report-has-a-strong-silver-lining-fa417fe9b34a

5. The IPCC 1.5C report maintains that government action alone is not enough to achieve the social transformation necessary to cope with the climate crisis. Fortunately, the costs and risks of inaction are becoming clearer, and the benefits of corporate action are becoming cheaper. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/clean-up-climate-change-its-just-good-for-business/2018/10/12/30f13e40-cda2-11e8-920f-dd52e1ae4570_story.html?utm_term=.d72637d4e946

6. In the last forty years insects and the animal which eat them in a national forest in Puerto Rico have gone into a steep decline, reinforcing similar declines reported elsewhere. 7. According to the IPCC, we need "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society." What would be the result? Perhaps an ecological civilization which prizes sustainability rather than growth. https://www.ecowatch.com/we-need-an-ecological-civilization-2612579358.html?utm_source=EcoWatch+List&utm_campaign=1b7e6fca8d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_49c7d43dc9-1b7e6fca8d-85965093
