1. A new method of producing hydrogen from sea water with solar cells holds promise as a source of renewable power. http://www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2019/03/simple-method-to-produce-clean-hydrogen-fuel-from-seawater/?utm_source=Anthropocene&utm_campaign=fb453225e6-Anthropocene+science+to+AM&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_ececcea89a-fb453225e6-294268545

2. In the Pliocene, 5.3-2.6 million years ago, global average temperatures appear to have been 3-4C hotter than today, and the sea level to have been 65 feet higher. That was the last time the atmosphere had the levels of CO2 that it has today. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2019/apr/03/south-pole-tree-fossils-indicate-impact-of-climate-change

3. A company in Australia is testing a thermal battery which is cheaper, more efficient, longer-lasting, and more environmentally benign than lithium batteries. It seems suitable for larger installations, replacing diesel generators, for example. It is being paired for off-grid use with a new design of relatively small solar concentrating generator being produced by Europe’s MIBA Solutions which would directly heat the battery. https://www.forbes.com/sites/natalieparletta/2019/04/03/new-thermal-battery-could-be-a-game-changer-for-storing-renewable-energy/#227044d64f95

4. The highlands of Guatemala are particularly susceptible to agricultural damage from climate change. Its refugees are largely victims of the climate. https://www.newyorker.com/news/dispatch/how-climate-change-is-fuelling-the-us-border-crisis

5. The half degree difference between 1.5C and 2C of warming could mean droughts and floods ten times as devastating. https://mailchi.mp/climatenewsnetwork/half-a-degree-may-make-heat-impact-far-worse?e=ea792e87f2

6. In 2015 NOAA organized a group of climate scientists to advise communities and business on practical ways to cope with climate change. Trump disbanded it. Now reconstituted as the Independent Advisory Committee for Applied Climate Assessment (IAC) and funded by New York state, the American Meteorological Society, and others, it has released a report. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-01090-0
Here is a summary of the IAC report with a link to the full text. The report basically outlines how an effort to support assessment might be organized and the services it might provide. One interesting recommendation: “Accelerate the use of artificial intelligence to support Climate Resilience Building.” https://www.ametsoc.org/index.cfm/ams/publications/bulletin-of-the-american-meteorological-society-bams/a-framework-for-sustained-national-climate-assessment-in-the-united-states/
It is disappointing that after four years to think about such an urgent matter the oracle seems to be preoccupied with how it might be supported and the services it could provide if it were. The next report may be on mission.

7. Some universities are stepping up with programs designed to help their communities adapt. Many others might, on the model of the land-grant universities and their regional mission. https://theconversation.com/climate-research-needs-to-change-to-help-communities-plan-for-the-future-113427?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20April%205%202019%20-%201278211859&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20April%205%202019%20-%201278211859+CID_e431f26cd7ea8489d8430e655d800a1e&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=Climate%20research%20needs%20to%20change%20to%20help%20communities%20plan%20for%20the%20future

Climate change science was driven by curiosity in the past. Now climate researchers need to focus on managing the risk of global warming's ill effects.
