1. Our Planet is a spectacular eight-part documentary on the ways our interdependent web of life is tattering, even giving way under climate change. It was to be made for the BBC but they would not let David Attenborough deal plainly with the issues. Netflix did. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/apr/05/our-planet-review-david-attenborough-netflix-eco-warrior-activist-bbc

In 2007, entrepreneur Mark Collins Chen became the minister of tourism in his native French Polynesia. One of his first tasks was to assess whether sea level rise was a threat to the group of 118 ...

Solution. The ocean covers two thirds of the planet. It is a vast resource that can help solve the complex challenges coastal cities face. We build for people who want to live sustainably across the nexus of energy, water, food, and waste.

One story reported that the city could withstand a category 5 hurricane. I have not seen that elsewhere, but it would be nice if it were true, even if hard to imagine. The general idea seems to be to anchor the cities a mile offshore. The impetus for the project comes from Pacific islanders who are likely to be better equipped culturally for such a life than most of the rest of us.

3. The world’s glaciers outside Greenland and the Antarctic are melting faster then we had thought, contributing 25-30% of sea level rise. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/earth-glaciers-melting-much-faster-than-previously-thought-study_n_5cab8b42e4b02e7a705be906

WASHINGTON (AP) — Earth’s glaciers are melting much faster than scientists thought. A new study shows they are losing 369 billion tons of snow and ice each year, more than half of that in North America. The most comprehensive measurement of glaciers worldwide found that thousands of inland ...

4. The unprecedented warming of the Arctic is disrupting global weather systems. https://www.ecowatch.com/arctic-climate-change-2634032427.html

"Never have so many Arctic indicators been brought together in a single paper." And the findings spell trouble for the entire planet.

5. The only US coal plant with carbon capture was supposed to remove 100% of the carbon but is getting 20%. Since a gas plant was built to run the capture system, the net effect is not promising. For the cost of the capture system alone they could have replaced the whole thing with renewable energy. (From the video interview with Mark Jacobson.) The attempt suggests the general situation with carbon capture proposals for fossil fuel energy. https://climatecrocks.com/2019/04/09/the-catch-with-carbon-capture/

I interviewed Mark Jacobson for this month’s video, which is coming this week. One topic we touched on was the viability of burning fossil fuels with carbon capture technology – of which we are both skeptical. New research supports that position. Efforts are underway to capture and store the ...

6. Beef is especially problematic for the environment. This piece by the World Resources Institute shows why. They are not after your hamburgers (at least, not all of them—though that’s always an option). https://www.wri.org/blog/2019/04/6-pressing-questions-about-beef-and-climate-change-answered?utm_campaign=wridigest&utm_source=wridigest-2019-04-9&utm_medium=email&utm_content=readmore

6) Would eating less beef be bad for jobs in the food and agriculture sector? The short answer: Not necessarily. The longer explanation: Given projected future growth in meat demand across the developing world, even if people in higher-income countries eat less beef, the global market for beef will likely continue to grow in the coming decades.
