1. Bill Maher ended his recent show with a segment on the urgency of climate action. https://climatecrocks.com/2019/02/02/the-senator-from-atlantis-bill-maher-on-the-climate-emergency/

2. The Greenland ice sheet was less stable in the distant past because of volcanic heat. The source has moved out from under Greenland. The ice sheet may still be stabilized by controlling greenhouse gas emissions. https://phys.org/news/2019-02-hypothesis-underground-future-greenland-ice.html

3. The AMOC will be disrupted by meltwater, especially from Greenland, by midcentury, much earlier than anticipated, according to a new study published in Nature. The effects include more extreme weather, more heat in the Arctic and the middle of the North American continent, and cooler temperatures in Europe and the NE Atlantic coast. Another study in the same issue expects ice cliffs Antarctic may be more stable than had been supposed, slowing sea level rise.

4. A destabilized AMOC would mean another foot or so of sea level rise along the US East Coast. https://thinkprogress.org/climate-tipping-point-century-ahead-of-schedule-warns-scientist-06d633f968fc/

5. An outline of the Green New Deal proposed in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would achieve carbon neutrality in ten years, offer universal healthcare, and undertake to guarantee jobs and higher education. It has 60 sponsors in the House and 9 in the Senate. While it may not pass the Senate, it will offer a platform for future political action. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/feb/07/green-new-deal-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-plan

The objectives of the Green New Deal are a continuation of Roosevelt’s New Deal. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/feb/07/green-new-deal-climate-change-us-politics

6. In the last news list, I mistakenly said that Dr. Todd Sack is a member of the Jacksonville Adaptation Area Action Working Group. He ought to be but is not. Their first meeting is set for late this month; early signs are that it will not be allowed to accomplish meaningful planning.
