1. Stephen Mulkey is introducing his U of Florida course, BSC2862, Global Change: Ecology and Responsibility, with a lecture Planetary Boundaries: Regime Change and Sustainability. Here are the illustrations he uses. It is a condensed dose of climate realism. https://environmentalcentury.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/planetary-boundaries-regime-shifts-and-sustainability.pdf

2. A study of possible pathways for climate action finds few that would lead to a tolerable future. Climate sensitivity (the general heating we will experience for a rise in atmospheric CO2) is a major variable; if we are lucky, it will be below expectations. “The researchers emphasize that rapid carbon reduction strategies provide a hedge against the possibility of high climate sensitivity scenarios.” Kelp permaculture, the production and burial of biochar, and the conversion of pastures to forests as we decrease meat consumption are major carbon reduction tools. The general message of the study is that we need to undertake a vigorous program of mitigation immediately. And be lucky. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/03/190311125353.htm

A new comprehensive study of climate change has painted over 5 million pictures of humanity's potential future, and few foretell an Earth that has not severely warmed. But with immediate action ...

3. Carbon capture claims require careful attention. For example, capturing CO2 and using it to drive the last oil from the crevices of a deposit is no service to the environment. https://www.climateliabilitynews.org/2019/03/13/carbon-capture-fossil-fuels-ciel-report/

A new report argues that investments in technology to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere would be better used transitioning to renewable energy.

4. Our priority must be to cease emitting greenhouse gasses. New Mexico is one of many states moving toward 100% clean energy. Their target is 80% by 2040 and 100% by 2045. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/13/new-mexico-jumps-at-chance-for-100-clean-electricity/?utm_source=CleanTechnica+News&utm_campaign=ae0ebf20f2-Daily+Email+CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b9b83ee7eb-ae0ebf20f2-331994013

6. When Danes, some of the world’s happiest people, run across an insoluble problem or a counsel to despair, they tell themselves “Pyt.” When they see something they need to do—say, cut meat consumption to lower their personal carbon emissions and water use, or urge a city council member to see that a vulnerability assessment tells them what risks they are running—they carry on with the task. https://theconversation.com/a-danish-word-the-world-needs-to-combat-stress-pyt-112216?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2014%202019%20-%201258611645&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20March%2014%202019%20-%201258611645+CID_e29848b415b12665b08512f307274436&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=A%20Danish%20word%20the%20world%20needs%20to%20combat%20stress%20Pyt
