1. The fossil fuel industry has been undermining climate action for a generation and more by selling the idea that scientists are much less in agreement on the climate crisis than they are. An international team recommends instructing the public on the industry’s propaganda techniques. https://phys.org/news/2019-10-scientists-reveal-fossil-fuel-industry.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=weekly-nwletter

Training in rhetoric, including logical fallacies and propaganda techniques, should be part of the preparation to be an English teacher, but it is not. Analysis of corporate and governmental propaganda should be part of basic instruction in English.

2. Another study, this one said to be the most sophisticated so far, holds that the best diet for the planet is also the best for health, and emphasizes fruit, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/28/healthy-diet-means-a-healthy-planet-study-shows

3. More than three times as many people are at risk of flooding this century from sea level rise than formerly thought, especially in Asia. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/29/rising-sea-levels-pose-threat-to-homes-of-300m-people-study

More detail from Climate Central on their study. Global land elevation figures are usually based on radar measurements by the Endeavor satellite in 2000. Those figures represent the top of the surface below the satellite, including tree tops and the roofs of skyscrapers. A refiguring of elevation finds that hundreds of millions more people will be displaced by 2 and 7 feet of sea level rise than we had thought. The caveats warn that the new method probably underestimates the vulnerability of coastal populations, and that the sea level rise estimates used are probably too conservative. https://www.climatecentral.org/news/report-flooded-future-global-vulnerability-to-sea-level-rise-worse-than-previously-understood

4. Murray Energy, the country’s largest coal miner, is the ninth coal company to declare bankruptcy during the Trump years. https://ohiovalleyresource.org/2019/10/29/ohio-based-coal-giant-murray-energy-declares-bankruptcy/

5. Cooling power plants takes about 40% of the US water supply. Renewable energy can cut that to close to zero. http://www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2019/10/one-more-reason-to-switch-to-renewable-energy-saving-water/?utm_source=Anthropocene&utm_campaign=a38b317a59-Anthropocene+science+to+AM&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_ececcea89a-a38b317a59-294268545
