1. Trees for Life has begun a project to rewild half a million acres of Scottish highlands in a single recovery area. https://www.treehugger.com/half-million-acres-scottish-highlands-rewilded-5204418?utm_campaign=treehugger&utm_medium=email&utm_source=cn_nl&utm_content=25235078&utm_term=

2. The UN and the UK are organizing an online citizens’ assembly of 100 persons to advise the COP26 meeting in Glasgow next month. Members will be chosen by lottery to represent global demographics. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/oct/05/global-citizens-assembly-to-be-chosen-for-un-climate-talks

3. The International Monetary Fund estimates that global subsidies for fossil fuels reached $5.9tn in 2020. Price supports and tax breaks were 14% of the total; deaths and health costs accounted for 42%, and the economic burden from heatwaves and other impacts of the climate crisis, 29%. The IMF called for fossil fuel prices which reflect those costs, along with support for consumers drawn from the savings as fossil fuel use dwindles. We would have trillions of dollars to do that, and a million citizens who would otherwise be dead. (If we included the military costs of our support for the designs of fossil fuel corporations the figures would be even higher.) https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/oct/06/fossil-fuel-industry-subsidies-of-11m-dollars-a-minute-imf-finds

4. A UN report warns of a looming water crisis, with 5 billion people having difficulty in accessing clean water by 2050. https://phys.org/news/2021-10-billion-struggle-access.html

5. Gregory Jaczko, former chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, holds that nuclear technology has nothing to offer the energy transition. Whatever we put into that technology would be much better used on renewables. The main project now is to get rid of gas. The 10-minute video interview extends the points of the article. https://climatecrocks.com/2021/10/06/former-nrc-chair-nuclear-not-a-climate-solution/
We from Jacksonville, FL, are well acquainted with the two Georgia nuclear plants which are 5 years past due and more than $10 billion over budget. Our public utility, JEA, bought us in for 10% of Vogtle’s cost, overrun and all, with no limit on liability. We’re still bleeding into it.

6. Ground-level ozone is mostly formed from pollutants created or released, directly and indirectly, from the use of fossil fuels. The third worst greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide and methane, it is also “the most damaging pollutant in the world” for plants, animals, and insects, a leading threat to biodiversity. https://e360.yale.edu/features/ozone-pollution-an-insidious-and-growing-threat-to-biodiversity
