[GWSG] Justice distracts?; power failing; RMI's forecast; bad seasons likely; the anti-gvts.; Mulkey's overview of AR6

1. Extinction Rebellion is still here, and stopping traffic in London, but it does not seem to have developed momentum since it was founded four years ago. Perhaps its general concern with justice, particularly for the children, leads the focus away from the here and now. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/09/extinction-rebellion-xr-climate-protesters-march-london-hyde-park

2. Foul weather, much of it related to the climate crisis, has brought record power failures to the US. (Renewable sources have proved more resilient than fossil fuels.) https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2022/04/07/309751.htm

3. An overview of the energy transition by the leadership of the Rocky Mountain Institute indicates that Putin’s War has considerably hastened the pace by linking renewables to security. We could—and, as the authors foresee, will—complete the move from fossil fuels by the end of this decade. (An EJ is an exojoule, an unimaginably large unit handy for global overviews.) Electric vehicles and efficiency will play their part. The article ends with a list of policies worth following and others worth avoiding. https://rmi.org/insight/from-deep-crisis-profound-change/

4. Extremely active hurricane seasons are twice as likely now as they were in the 1980s. The numbers of storms have not increased so much as the intensity, thanks to higher sea surface temperatures. Climate breakdown is also increasing the amount of extreme rainfall. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/apr/13/hurricanes-atlantic-climate-change-tropical-cyclones

5. It is no news that the Trump administration attacked climate policies. Other populist governments in majoritarian countries, as opposed to those with proportional representation, saw a degradation of attempts to deal with the climate breakdown. They include Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Poland, and Austria. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/apr/14/rightwing-populist-parties-blight-climate-policy-study-finds

6. U of FL ecologist Stephen Mulkey has taped a two-part, one-hour illustrated report on the IPCC’s AR6, probably the last comprehensive report we will get while we still have a chance to do something about the climate breakdown. Made for Mulkey’s students, they are a rare chance to examine this crucial report. A script on the left side of the screen ensures that you will be able to follow his presentation; the illustrations provide a satisfying level of detail in an available way. (The automated transcription even provides some mild unintentional humor.)
