[GWSG] First mammal gone; Jax studies; Finland leads; cloudy or not?; directors' warning; dirty tires

1. The Bramble Cay melomyses—a small, cute rodent—is the first mammal lost to the climate disruption. Its habitat was destroyed by sea level rise. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/01/extinction-obituary-bramble-cay-melomys-climate-change-aoe

2. By combining a study of heat risk with an analysis of flooding risk, Jacksonville, FL, will have what would amount to a comprehensive vulnerability study by this fall (if the two studies were to be genuinely comprehensive. The flooding study is said by a reliable source to address only major city assets such as hospitals, and those superficially. The heat census promises to me more useful.) The combined studies are meant to form the basis for designing a comprehensive resilience strategy for coping with the climate crisis. Chief Resiliency Officer Anne Coglianese is leading the effort against political headwinds. Successive city administrations have resisted so much as a sea level rise study for decades, and we have allowed them to get away with it. If the flooding study is inadequate, it will at least be a beginning and will highlight the need for a better one. Perhaps then we could proceed to a carbon audit and a mitigation plan. https://jaxtoday.org/2022/05/31/jacksonville-isnt-letting-a-single-grant-opportunity-slip-by-for-resilience/?utm_source=WJCT+Public+Media+Audience&utm_campaign=95bdbb833e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_05_31_01_47&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a85261583a-95bdbb833e-579186741

3. Finland has set the world’s most ambitious climate target: net zero by 2035 and carbon negative by 2040. South Sudan, with a goal of net zero by 2030, is their primary competitor. https://www.climatechangenews.com/2022/05/31/finland-sets-worlds-most-ambitious-climate-target-in-law/?utm_campaign=Daily%20Briefing&utm_content=20220601&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter

4. As the climate is disrupted, how will clouds react? A computer modelling technique combines high resolution and low resolution analyses, aided by artificial intelligence, in hopes of finding an answer. (We want lots of clouds because they turn down the heat.) https://phys.org/news/2022-05-cloudless-future-mystery-heart-climate.html

5. Three former directors of the UN climate program have written that current plans by the world’s governments would not meet the agreed climate target of 1.5C, but would result in 2.7-3.6C of heat. Those levels must be avoided by revised programs. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which they led, has been engaging the crisis for 30 years. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jun/02/for-50-years-governments-have-failed-to-act-on-climate-change-no-more-excuses

 6. Tires are a major source of particulate pollution—almost 2,000 times worse than vehicle exhausts. They are currently made from crude oil, and their emissions are unregulated. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/03/car-tyres-produce-more-particle-pollution-than-exhausts-tests-show
