1. Fourth Power has developed a heat-based energy storage system ten times cheaper than lithium-ion batteries for grid-scale applications. With funding from Munich Re and other sources the American firm is preparing to offer 100+ hours of energy storage. Its system is modular; add-ons are simple. Large renewable power installations should benefit. Fossil fuels should take a major hit. https://cleantechnica.com/2025/09/17/energy-storage-10x-cheaper-than-lithium-ion-batteries-is-coming-for-your-fossil-fuels/
2. Ocean acidity has crossed the planetary boundary into levels hostile to marine life. The Potsdam Institute in its annual assessment named acidity as the seventh boundary to be transgressed out of the nine defined. John Rockstrom, Director of the Institute: “We are witnessing widespread decline in the health of our planet. But this is not an inevitable outcome. The drop in aerosol pollution and healing of the ozone layer, shows that it is possible to turn the direction of global development. Even if the diagnosis is dire, the window of cure is still open. Failure is not inevitable; failure is a choice. A choice that must and can be avoided.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/sep/24/worlds-oceans-fail-key-health-check-as-acidity-crosses-critical-threshold-for-marine-life
