1. For many coastal communities, at the end of the planning for sea level rise lies retreat. As Sidney, New York found, that road is rocky. Their experience indicates the kind of reforms necessary before relocation can work well. Ed Brock sends the story. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-05-02/the-u-s-climate-strategy-of-total-retreat-is-failing

For people familiar with West Kentucky the relocations necessary for the creation of Lake Barkley are a cautionary tale. For example, Eddyville, a beautiful little town ranged on hillsides around an impressive gothic prison, became a graceless plot of modular homes. We could do better with planning. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddyville,_Kentucky The residents of the lush little community of Golden Pond were evacuated or simply wandered away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Pond,_Kentucky Robert Penn Warren's novel Flood eulogizes one lost community. https://smile.amazon.com/Flood-Robert-Penn-Warren/dp/B001F3P6GY/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1525615240&sr=1-1&keywords=warren+the+flood

2. While China is closing coal plants at home, they are funding a fifth of the world's new coal plan construction abroad. https://mailchi.mp/climatenewsnetwork/confusion-reigns-over-chinas-energy-policy?e=ea792e87f2

3. Climate Action 100+ is a group of 250 managing $30 trillion in assets. The STOXX index of companies with business models in accord with the Paris Agreement outperforms its all stocks index. The group urges companies to adjust their own investment programs to back the Paris goals. Ultimately climate risks "are attached to the whole economy." https://www.msn.com/en-us/finance/markets/investors-prod-climate-polluters-as-trump-unpicks-paris-deal/ar-AAwVa1c

4. Rejection of climate science is linked to right-wing conspiracy theories only in the US, according to a survey. Yet there is no intrinsic link between climate denial and conservatism. Vested interests have carried on an ignorance campaign which has taken a particularly strong hold in the US. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/planet-oz/2018/may/08/its-all-about-vested-interests-untangling-conspiracy-conservatism-and-climate-scepticism

5. Rising summertime temperatures would hamper growth in several states, particularly in a list which all voted for Trump in 2016. Yet many legislators from such states profess to be more worried about the economic impact of a carbon tax, which is likely to spur growth. Internationally, those countries which contributed least to climate change will be the most damaged. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/may/07/global-warming-will-depress-economic-growth-in-trump-country

6. More than 8,000 protected fish habitats will be degraded by rising heat unless emissions are brought under control, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change. http://www.jacksonville.com/news/20180507/scientists-climate-change-could-punish-fish-habitats-targeted-for-conservation ?
