1. We can guess the general reason the US government is interested in silencing the Children’s Trust case—it doesn’t want to air its own indefensible service to corporate profits from fossil fuels. A closer analysis shows how powerful the children’s argument is. Much of their evidence comes from the government itself. The children are not even arguing self-interest, but the interest of future generations. https://www.climateliabilitynews.org/2018/10/29/us-government-kids-climate-case/

A suit by 21 young people claiming the government's energy policy is depriving them of rights has provoked a furious legal response to keep it from trial.

2. Humans are responsible for the loss of 60% of mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish since 1970. The web of life is endangered. https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/10/30/humanity-sleepwalking-towards-edge-cliff-60-earths-wildlife-wiped-out-1970

Scientists from around the world issued a stark warning to humanity Tuesday in a semi-annual report on the Earth's declining biodiversity, which shows that about 60 percent of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles have been wiped out by human activity since 1970.

3. A plant-based diet can reduce land devoted to agriculture by 76%. That is a lot of potential reforesting and would provide a major carbon drawdown. It would also mean we would switch to a plant-based diet. A Finnish startup, Solar Foods, is producing protein, carbohydrates and fat from air, sunlight, and a little water and minerals, with the help of grazing bacteria—and no plants or animals at all. (The new electric food would be used as the base for processed products probably using plants.) George Monbiot believes Solar Foods has the potential to reverse the losses of the previous item and the heating of the succeeding one. He does not address its taste, though that is probably manageable. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/31/electric-food-sci-fi-diet-planet-food-animals-environment

5. George Monbiot is one of the English scientists and supporters who have launched ExtinctionRebellion, which intends to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience to “force governments to enter World War Two-level mobilisation mode, in response to climate breakdown and ecological crisis.” https://mailchi.mp/climatenewsnetwork/uk-scientists-risk-prison-to-urge-action?e=ea792e87f2

6. US nonwhites are more concerned than whites about the environment. Whether people consider themselves to be environmentalists is not linked to education or income. People hold stereotypes which contradict both those statements. The generalizations are based on an online survey reported in PNAS, “Diverse segments of the US public underestimate the environmental concerns of minority and low-income Americans”. http://www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2018/10/everyone-has-got-to-stop-assuming-that-only-white-people-care-about-the-environment/

In the United States today, a substantial proportion of people consider themselves environmentalists and say they are concerned about climate change and the environment.
