1. Sea level rise will force most coastal communities to retreat. Planned and managed retreats are a lot less traumatic, though the officials who announce them will experience trauma enough. How do we get managed retreat without heroic and often sacrificial managers? A fully supported, politically and commercially independent regional planning agency might be the answer, if such a thing is possible. San Francisco’s SPUR at least moves in the right direction. Images of vanishing Arctic ice and mountain glaciers are jarring, but their potential contributions to sea level rise are no match for Antarctica's, even if receding southern ice is less eye-catching.


5. As the oceans acidify, it is harder for crustaceans to form shells, so less carbon is fixed by them, leading to further carbon buildup in a positive feedback. At several times in the past such a buildup has led to a mass extinction.
