1. California, Washington State, Rhode Island, Minnesota, and Virginia have all passed or are considering state targets to end emissions from light vehicles, some as part of a general program of electrification and emissions reduction. CA set a 2035 target for ending sales of internal combustion vehicles; a WA bill setting a 2030 target (and not including plug-in hybrids, as CA does) awaits the governor’s signature. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1135338_washington-state-end-gasoline-car-sales-by-2030-really-this-time?utm_source=GCR+-+Daily+Headlines&utm_campaign=06e9e46d57-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_03_17_04_05&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_7e18d5fd93-06e9e46d57-54646949

2. Antarctica has experienced an unexpected heat dome bringing temperatures as high as 90F above normal. A few days ago, the Arctic was 50F above normal. The Arctic is generally warming faster than the Antarctic. https://phys.org/news/2022-03-hot-poles-antarctica-arctic-degrees.html

3. Several scientists react to the Antarctic heat wave. Andrew Dessler: “We are seeing the world remade before our eyes.” https://climatecrocks.com/2022/03/19/scientists-react-to-stunning-antarctic-heat-wave/

4. New offshore wind farms will help the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands move away from Russian (and US) gas. https://climatecrocks.com/2022/03/19/ukraine-war-supercharges-global-move-to-clean-energy/

5. Russia stands to gain from the climate crisis as its agriculture flourishes and the Arctic opens to its ships. Putin has been a climate whisperer promoting fossil fuels through his Republican allies in the US and generally uncooperative in international climate action. However, his war on Ukraine may speed the transition to renewable energy. Much depends on the willingness of China and the US congress to act while distracted by Putin’s violence. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/18/could-ukraine-war-help-end-wests-reliance-on-hydrocarbons
